Since 2018, the wastewater has been collected in the collection basin under the close-by "Sempach" park and then transported via special pipelines to a bioreactor of the local wastewater company on the river Aare, where it is converted into biogas.

Bern Site head Martin Schaeren and Arnold Nigsch, Head of Engineering Services, explained the goal, scope and significance of the innovative project to the visitors. Since 2018, the wastewater has been collected in the collection basin under the close-by "Sempach" park and then transported via special pipeliness to a bioreactor of the local wastewater company on the Aare, where it is converted into biogas. This biogas is used, among other things, to operate public transport, and covers 20% of CSL Behring's gas requirements at the Bern site.
